{"id":517,"date":"2011-06-18T23:32:30","date_gmt":"2011-06-19T04:32:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/?p=517"},"modified":"2013-05-29T15:04:18","modified_gmt":"2013-05-29T20:04:18","slug":"three-bucket-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/?p=517","title":{"rendered":"Three Bucket Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_518\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 297px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/three-pea-buckets.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-518  \" title=\"three pea buckets\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/three-pea-buckets.jpg\" width=\"297\" height=\"313\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Buckets O&#8217; Peas<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Today is a three bucket day in the garden.\u00a0 Even before drinking my first cup of coffee of the day, I was out picking Texas Elite Cream Peas.\u00a0 The temperatures were bearable with a very pleasant breeze.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I picked the first gallon bucket within a couple of minutes, then grabbed the second gallon bucket.\u00a0 It filled as quickly so I dumped it into a 5 gallon bucket and continued to pick.\u00a0 Before long, the big bucket and the two smaller ones were full and the sun was beginning to heat up.\u00a0 I decided I&#8217;d finish picking peas either late this evening or in the morning.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll be busy shelling peas this weekend as I watch movies or listen to music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Today, I plan to can ripe tomatoes and cucumbers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Since we retired the big, inefficient chest freezer last year, the refrigerator&#8217;s small freezer is stuffed full.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve decided to purchase a small, high efficiency chest freezer to help hold some of our harvest.\u00a0 We don&#8217;t own an operating pickup truck (the Dodge is dead again!) so I&#8217;ve researched the cost to rent a truck.\u00a0 YIKES!\u00a0 In our area, daily rental for a small truck is $79 per day plus mileage!\u00a0 Because we live several miles behind the boonies, the mileage alone would be a major factor.\u00a0 The cost of transporting the appliance would double its cost!\u00a0 I&#8217;ve not found any store willing to deliver to our location.\u00a0 Yep, sometimes living in the country has its drawbacks&#8230; no pizza delivery, no trash pickup and no store deliveries&#8230; BUT we have fabulous night skies and no traffic!!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To solve the freezer dilemma, I decided to purchase a trailer hitch for my SUV which came with a towing package.\u00a0 A high-quality hitch costs about the same as one day&#8217;s truck rental and I can rent a small trailer for less than $15 per day (no mileage charge).\u00a0 This is the most reasonable solution and offers me the option of hauling composted dirt for the garden, the new mattress I want, and recyclables we&#8217;ve collected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ahhhh&#8230; Liberation!!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Shirl<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Today is a three bucket day in the garden.\u00a0 Even before drinking my first cup of coffee of the day, I was out picking Texas Elite Cream Peas.\u00a0 The temperatures were bearable with a very pleasant breeze.
