{"id":3668,"date":"2017-09-07T14:41:54","date_gmt":"2017-09-07T19:41:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/?p=3668"},"modified":"2017-09-08T11:54:20","modified_gmt":"2017-09-08T16:54:20","slug":"high-and-dry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/?p=3668","title":{"rendered":"High and dry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve spent the last week or so very happy I don&#8217;t <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/baby-hat-081717.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3669\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/baby-hat-081717.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"363\" \/><\/a>still live in Houston.\u00a0 There are things I truly miss about living in a sizeable city (pizza delivery, big grocery stores, garage\/yard sales, etc.) but since leaving there nearly 25 years ago, the flooding issue has gotten so much worse.\u00a0 Add that to the record-breaking rainfall spawned by Hurricane Harvey and I can only feel bad for old friends still there while feeling thankful I&#8217;m not dealing with insurance companies and contractors.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll happily live without pizza delivery!<\/p>\n<p>We did experience 5 days of rain from the storm but I&#8217;m at the top of a big sandy hill so I didn&#8217;t see as much as a puddle here.\u00a0 The rain was mostly slow and steady accompanied by a light breeze offering me the perfect excuse to stay inside, knit and sew.\u00a0 The storm also helped eliminate the 100\u00b0+ daily outdoor temperatures.\u00a0 My air conditioners, electric bill and wallet are eternally happy for the break!<\/p>\n<p>While the rains fell, I finished knitting a baby blanket for my neighbor.\u00a0 I haven&#8217;t blocked it yet so no picture at this time.\u00a0 I also knitted this little hat from leftover sock yarn.\u00a0 The pattern was free from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redheart.com\/free-patterns\/babys-first-hat\">Redheart<\/a>.\u00a0 I was fascinated with how quickly baby items are made.\u00a0 This was a one day, spare time effort and hopefully will be useful for this autumn baby.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Socks-9.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3671\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Socks-9.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"301\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I finally managed to finish another pair of socks for Jake.\u00a0 These seemed to take forever because of lots of interruptions and the fact that I dropped a size on the needles making the socks a little smaller and more densely knit (more stitches = more time).\u00a0 The pattern is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ravelry.com\/patterns\/library\/a-nice-ribbed-sock\">&#8216;A Nice Ribbed Sock&#8217; by Glenna C<\/a>.\u00a0 The yarn is from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etsy.com\/shop\/AGuyTwoNeedlesYarn?ref=l2-shopheader-name\">A Guy Two Needles Yarn<\/a> in colorway Mardi Gras.\u00a0 I was a little surprised the yarn didn&#8217;t pool but pretty thankful there are no big puddles of pink.\u00a0 The toes were knitted with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knitpicks.com\/yarns\/Stroll_Sock_Yarn__D5420133.html\">Knit Picks Stroll<\/a> fingering yarn in black.<\/p>\n<p>Needless to say, I&#8217;ve already started another pair of socks; these in NEON colors!\u00a0 They will be &#8230; uhh &#8230; wild!!<\/p>\n<p>I took the time this week to inspect my closet and analyze my clothing situation.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve decided many of my tops are looking limp and dismal.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll take the decent ones and downgrade them to everyday wear and make a few new things.\u00a0 The heavens know I have plenty of stash fabric on hand to cut and sew.<\/p>\n<p>The first top was made of batik fabric.\u00a0 I dearly love batik because of the hand dyed interesting artistic designs, color combinations and that they are woven more densely, allowing for opaque coverage.\u00a0 The pattern I used is <a href=\"https:\/\/mccallpattern.mccall.com\/m5640\">McCall&#8217;s M5640<\/a>.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve sewn this pattern many times for tops, nightgowns and maxi lounge gowns.\u00a0 It&#8217;s so versatile.\u00a0 The top offers loose, modest coverage even on days when bra wearing is too painful (darned surgical scars!).\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/batik-blouse.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3670\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/batik-blouse.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fabric has already been selected to make two more tops and a nightgown from this pattern.<\/p>\n<p>After a quick doctor&#8217;s office visit with his PA and having blood drawn, I&#8217;ve been asked to return next week (never a good sign).\u00a0 I had shown the Physician&#8217;s Assistant a lesion near my ear that is lingering and doesn&#8217;t seem to want to heal.\u00a0 After being told to return, I&#8217;ve searched the Net and found photos of what appears to be the exact same lesion.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve diagnosed myself (always a dangerous thing) with squamous cells carcinoma.\u00a0 When caught early, it&#8217;s pretty harmless but because it&#8217;s located in a place I can&#8217;t see (and I live alone), I&#8217;ve ignored it longer than I probably should.\u00a0 It is already affecting my hearing (sounds like the ear is stuffed with cotton).\u00a0 Needless to say, I&#8217;m not looking forward to seeing the doc next week for his recommendations.\u00a0 If it has advanced, I could be looking at not only surgery to remove it but chemo to treat it.\u00a0 UGH!<\/p>\n<p>Oh well, I&#8217;ve survived 2 other cancer diagnoses and treatments so I expect to survive this one too.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a good thing I&#8217;m TOUGH!<\/p>\n<p>Have a great week and those in the paths of storms, know my thoughts are with you.<\/p>\n<p>Shirl<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve spent the last week or so very happy I don&#8217;t still live in Houston.\u00a0 There are things I truly miss about living in a sizeable city (pizza delivery, big grocery stores, garage\/yard sales, etc.) but since leaving there nearly 25 years ago, the flooding issue has gotten so much worse.\u00a0 Add that to the<span class=\"more-excerpt\"><a class=\"more-excerpt-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/?p=3668\"> (continue reading&#8230;)  <\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[41,10,13],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3668"}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=3668"}],"version-history":[{"count":17,"href":"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3668\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":3688,"href":"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3668\/revisions\/3688"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=3668"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=3668"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=3668"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
