{"id":3135,"date":"2016-04-22T21:49:16","date_gmt":"2016-04-23T02:49:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/?p=3135"},"modified":"2016-04-24T13:36:35","modified_gmt":"2016-04-24T18:36:35","slug":"more-baking-and-rug-making","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/?p=3135","title":{"rendered":"More baking and rug making"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Happy Friday!<\/p>\n<p>Between <del>working<\/del> playing in the garden and quilting, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/cinnamon-rolls.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3137\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/cinnamon-rolls.jpg\" alt=\"SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES\" width=\"350\" height=\"204\" \/><\/a> I&#8217;ve been rug making and baking.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d really like to be a better baker and the only way that can be accomplished is PRACTICE!\u00a0 After making three successful batches of cinnamon rolls, today I decided to bake some blueberry muffins.\u00a0 They turned out great!<\/p>\n<p>I know for most cooks, these are mindlessly simple accomplishments but I&#8217;m starting from below-scratch with my lifelong aversion to baking and long line of disasters.\u00a0 I&#8217;m hoping to build my confidence with a string of successes and develop a love of the craft.<\/p>\n<p>The house smells wonderful and DH definitely enjoys <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/blueberry-muffins.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3136\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/blueberry-muffins.jpg\" alt=\"SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES\" width=\"350\" height=\"275\" \/><\/a>treats from the oven accompanying his afternoon and evening coffee.\u00a0 He&#8217;s always complimentary and never leaves any to go stale.\u00a0 He even cleans the kitchen after my baking sessions!!\u00a0 Unfortunately, he doesn&#8217;t eat them all and doesn&#8217;t wrestle me away from them.\u00a0 Willpower has never been my strong suit!<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m sure baking is only a current trend.\u00a0 During our hot summers, I avoid using the oven so I will bake as long as Spring temperatures continue.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll give some thought to developing a new talent for Summer&#8230;. maybe I should try exercising!\u00a0 Not likely!!<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been really pleased using my second twined rug but for the third, I decided to try tackling the stack of used jeans we&#8217;ve saved through the years.\u00a0 Many of them have holes in the fronts and the leg backs are faded but still usable.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/denim-rug.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3138\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/denim-rug.jpg\" alt=\"SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES\" width=\"350\" height=\"461\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I spent several days &#8216;de-boning&#8217; jeans; removing the rear pockets, cutting away the zippers, yokes, waistbands and belt loops.\u00a0 What a chore!!\u00a0 I&#8217;ve gone through nearly half of them, cut the legs into strips and began twining a new rug.<\/p>\n<p>For this rug, I&#8217;ve used high-quality muslin for the warp.\u00a0 The light, blotchy denim is from the jeans back legs and the mottled areas are where pockets were once located.\u00a0 The super-dark stripes are made using new midnight blue denim I&#8217;ve had in the stash for nearly 20 years.\u00a0 The muslin was cut into 2 \u00bc&#8221; strips and the denim is cut into 1 \u00bd&#8221; strips.\u00a0 It takes real muscle to manipulate the thick fabric but will result in a tough, heavy duty rug\/mat.\u00a0 It&#8217;s slow going but I&#8217;m enjoying it and plan to continue making dark and light evenly distributed stripes.<\/p>\n<p>Happy weekend!<\/p>\n<p>Shirl<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Happy Friday!
