{"id":2602,"date":"2015-05-05T14:28:36","date_gmt":"2015-05-05T19:28:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/?p=2602"},"modified":"2015-05-05T16:39:23","modified_gmt":"2015-05-05T21:39:23","slug":"early-harvests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/?p=2602","title":{"rendered":"Early harvests"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_2603\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 400px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Kohlrabi-harvest-050515.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2603\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Kohlrabi-harvest-050515.jpg\" alt=\"SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES\" width=\"400\" height=\"290\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Harvested fresh kohlrabi<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After harvesting 2 kohlrabi and some snow peas and including them in our shrimp fried rice dinner last evening, I decided all the kohlrabi are ready to be picked.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve never eaten kohlrabi, they taste nearly exactly like the peeled stems (my favorite part!) of fresh broccoli.\u00a0 The young leaves and stems are also edible.\u00a0 We loved the flavor they added to our dinner and wish we had planted more than 9 plants.\u00a0 There WILL be more planted in our fall garden.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight, I&#8217;ll peel, julienne and steam a few of these bulbs along with some fresh snow peas, mushrooms and carrots.\u00a0 It will be a delicious side dish served with smothered pork chops I&#8217;ll also make.\u00a0 My mouth is watering just thinking of it!<\/p>\n<p>Each day the snow pea yield increases.\u00a0 Currently I harvest about a quart Ziploc\u00ae packed full each day.\u00a0 Those we don&#8217;t eat right away, I blanch and freeze.\u00a0 They will be so tasty during the heat of summer when those plants no longer produce.\u00a0 When the weather cools later in the year, I&#8217;ll plant more in our fall garden.<\/p>\n<p>While enjoying a cuppa and strolling in the garden earlier, I noticed several eggplants have begun blooming.\u00a0 I do enjoy eating eggplant from time to time but DH mistakenly purchased over a dozen plants!\u00a0 EEEK!\u00a0 If they produce as I suspect they will, we&#8217;ll have enough to feed much of the county!\u00a0 I see a heap of eggplant parmesan in our future!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2606\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 401px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Wonky-Stars-back-quilting.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2606\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Wonky-Stars-back-quilting.jpg\" alt=\"SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES\" width=\"401\" height=\"301\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wonky Star quilting &#8211; back<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After dinner each night as I relax from a busy day, I continue to hand quilt Wonky Stars.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve completed all the squares and am now concentrating on the stars.\u00a0 They are about half done.\u00a0 I haven&#8217;t decided how I&#8217;ll quilt the border.<\/p>\n<p>It has begun raining &#8211; the first of 9 days of predicted precipitation.\u00a0 Being forced to stay inside will afford me an opportunity to continue quilting on the Split-16 borders.\u00a0 They are over half done and I can think of nothing that would make me happier than seeing this <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">LONG<\/span> project finished.<\/p>\n<p>Shirl<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After harvesting 2 kohlrabi and some snow peas and including them in our shrimp fried rice dinner last evening, I decided all the kohlrabi are ready to be picked.
