{"id":2315,"date":"2014-09-13T20:27:22","date_gmt":"2014-09-14T01:27:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/?p=2315"},"modified":"2016-07-11T13:10:09","modified_gmt":"2016-07-11T18:10:09","slug":"2315","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/?p=2315","title":{"rendered":"Urban Renewal quilt top and  picture tutorial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Urban-Renewal-090914.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-2312\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Urban-Renewal-090914.jpg\" alt=\"SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES\" width=\"361\" height=\"315\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This week on Facebook, I posted this picture of my progress on the Urban Renewal (Inner City) quilt top.\u00a0 I was overwhelmed by the positive comments and &#8216;likes&#8217; it received.\u00a0 I also received quite a few inquiries about assembly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I&#8217;d LOVE to see boatloads of quilts made with this pattern so I thought I would show a picture story of the steps I&#8217;m taking to make this top and the thought process behind my choices.\u00a0 It may not be the easiest or most efficient method but it is the one that works for me.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I wanted to use up many of the already cut fabric pieces I had left from assembling my Grandmother&#8217;s Flower Garden top.\u00a0 After making a queen size top, I used some of the leftover pieces to make a baby quilt top.\u00a0 Yes, I&#8217;m frugal!\u00a0 I STILL have pieces left!\u00a0 I took light, medium and dark hues of individual colors and trimmed the hexagrams to the trapezoid shapes I need for this new quilt. I also cut new paper pieces (1.5&#8243; on each short side) from used printer paper for assembly in the English Paper Piecing technique.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Inner-City-1.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2316\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Inner-City-1.jpg\" alt=\"SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES\" width=\"288\" height=\"237\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">1.\u00a0 In this first picture, you see the trapezoid papers set atop the fabric pieces. I add holes (with a holepunch) to the center of each paper to assist in removing the papers after assembling the top.\u00a0\u00a0 Notice the fabric is cut 1\/4&#8243; all around larger than the papers.\u00a0 The fabric doesn&#8217;t need to be cut perfectly as the outside edges are turned under and basted around the paper.\u00a0 The papers should be precisely cut, each to the same size and shape.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Inner-City-2-.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2317\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Inner-City-2-.jpg\" alt=\"SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES\" width=\"288\" height=\"260\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">2.\u00a0 In this picture, you see basted pieces in three green hues.\u00a0 Each 2 matching pieces need to be stitched together as shown.\u00a0 To do this, I place the pieces atop each other, right sides together, and whip stitch together along one angled side to make a boomerang.\u00a0 These three boomerangs will make one &#8216;Y&#8217; unit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Inner-City-3.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2318\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Inner-City-3.jpg\" alt=\"SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES\" width=\"288\" height=\"274\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">3.\u00a0 This top is not made in blocks, but in &#8216;Y&#8217; units.\u00a0 Each unit is made with 3 boomerangs, whipstitched down each long side.\u00a0 Be certain to lay out each hue identically with the other units.\u00a0 On my top, I placed the lightest hue on the top, and the darkest on the right.\u00a0 This gives the 3 D effect to the top.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Inner-City-4.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2319\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Inner-City-4.jpg\" alt=\"SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES\" width=\"288\" height=\"305\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">4.\u00a0 Make a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">bunch<\/span> of &#8216;Y&#8217; units, all with light, medium and dark hues.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll be amazed at just how many it takes to assemble a top.\u00a0 I became bored after making several dozen units so I would assemble them into diagonal rows, being careful to distribute my colors as I wanted them in the top and making certain the hues were positioned correctly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Inner-City-5.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2320\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Inner-City-5.jpg\" alt=\"SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES\" width=\"288\" height=\"308\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">5.\u00a0 Though there&#8217;s not a great variety here, this is a sample of how to assemble diagonal rows.\u00a0 There is no need to snip the little ears from the units as they will swirl on the back without leaving a hard bump.\u00a0 I assemble enough of these diagonal rows to make the width of the quilt top.\u00a0 My top is currently 52&#8243; wide before adding borders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the near future, I plan to add Kona black trapezoids and hexagrams to fill in the edges of the top.\u00a0 My thinking is it will provide the sought-after 3 D effect all the way to the borders.\u00a0 At this time, I have not decided if I will include a pieced or solid border or two.\u00a0 I will begin auditioning options soon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Shirl<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week on Facebook, I posted this picture of my progress on the Urban Renewal (Inner City) quilt top.\u00a0 I was overwhelmed by the positive comments and &#8216;likes&#8217;
