{"id":2151,"date":"2014-06-10T16:08:08","date_gmt":"2014-06-10T21:08:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/?p=2151"},"modified":"2014-06-20T14:39:37","modified_gmt":"2014-06-20T19:39:37","slug":"i-really-need-another-quilt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/?p=2151","title":{"rendered":"I REALLY need another quilt&#8230;."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">NOT!!..<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> but I just can&#8217;t stop myself!\u00a0 I have come to understand how my grandmother, after gifting many, died with an attic stuffed with finished quilts.\u00a0 They are sooo darned fun to make!<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2152\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 395px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Inner-City-beginning-060814.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2152\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Inner-City-beginning-060814.jpg\" alt=\"Urban Renewal embryo\" width=\"395\" height=\"325\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Urban Renewal embryo<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I&#8217;m taking a little break from the sewing machine (making shirts gets boring after a while) to enjoy some hand piecing.\u00a0 I spent a few days researching which pattern I wanted to make when I came upon this one called &#8216;Inner City&#8217;.\u00a0 It&#8217;s made with half-hexagons of colors in light, medium and dark\u00a0 values.\u00a0 It spoke to me in more ways than one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">First off, I like the 3D effect of the pattern.\u00a0 Secondly, I enjoy English Paper Piecing (the assembly method of these units), but mostly, the pattern speaks to my frugality.\u00a0 I already have unused cut hexagons left from assembling my &#8216;Grandmother&#8217;s Flower Garden&#8217; quilt top.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I pulled out the box of leftovers and after careful measuring, I decided the size of these hexi&#8217;s is perfect when trimmed for the new project.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I drew new papers (for paper piecing), copied them and cut them from last year&#8217;s drug insurance handbook.\u00a0 Used paper is ideal for this project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I dug around the leftovers and was able to match 3 values of many fabric colors.\u00a0 Some units will require I cut new half-hexi&#8217;s for one of the color values.\u00a0 Most of little half-hexi&#8217;s will come from my small bits-n-crumbs bin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I put together the pictured units last night.\u00a0 I<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> \u2665 <span style=\"color: #000000;\">the addictive quality of labor intensive <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">English Paper Piecing.\u00a0 It&#8217;s mindless busy-work for my hands as I watch movies or visit with family.\u00a0 I&#8217;m also attracted to expending what is essentially trash to become a useful thing of beauty.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hmmmm, think I&#8217;ll call this quilt &#8216;Urban Renewal&#8217;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We enjoyed a wonderful, extended weekend with Jacob and (as always) hated to see him leave.\u00a0 We look forward to his next visit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Shirl<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NOT!!.. but I just can&#8217;t stop myself!\u00a0 I have come to understand how my grandmother, after gifting many, died with an attic stuffed with finished quilts.\u00a0 They are sooo darned fun to make!
