{"id":1231,"date":"2013-05-14T00:47:25","date_gmt":"2013-05-14T05:47:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/?p=1231"},"modified":"2016-11-17T17:35:35","modified_gmt":"2016-11-17T23:35:35","slug":"welcome-blog-hoppers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/?p=1231","title":{"rendered":"Welcome Blog Hoppers!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Welcome fellow <a title=\"Celebrate Hand Quilting\" href=\"http:\/\/celebratehandquilting.blogspot.com\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Celebrate Hand Quilting <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1233\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/CelebrateHandQuilting.jpg\" alt=\"CelebrateHandQuilting\" width=\"250\" height=\"189\" \/>blog<\/span><\/a> and Facebook friends.\u00a0 I&#8217;m Shirley Lucher-Suter on FB and shirlsu in the blogging world.\u00a0 So glad you&#8217;ve stopped by!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Pardon the spiderwebs at my doorstep and the dust on my doormat.\u00a0 This blog (actually more of a digital diary) seldom has visitors but I&#8217;m thrilled to be part of Caron&#8217;s blog hop and becoming better acquainted with hand quilters.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">My quilting history<\/span>:\u00a0 My grandmother was a life-long quilter but I didn&#8217;t pay much attention to the process until I was around age eight.\u00a0 By that time, I had learned to machine and hand sew and anything involving fabric and thread fascinated me.\u00a0 She invited me to join her at her quilt frame to thread needles and watch as she stitched.\u00a0 She was a &#8216;utility&#8217; stitcher, only 4-5 double-thread stitches per inch and could quilt a full-size quilt in a few days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Eventually, she let me help with the quilting but always made fun of my little stitches and slow pace.\u00a0 In hand sewing, I had been taught to always take small stitches for added strength and longevity&#8230; it was a habit that extends into my quilting today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I began my own first quilt at the age of 15, using scraps from my garment sewing and from friends&#8217; old clothes.\u00a0 It was a simple square patchwork but because I hadn&#8217;t learned the importance of keeping the squares a uniform size, the top is ridiculously wavy.\u00a0 I hope someday to completely disassemble and re-make it.\u00a0 Lots of memories live in that quilt top.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1245\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 420px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Tumbling-blocks-1980.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1245 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Tumbling-blocks-1980.jpg\" alt=\"Altered Tumbling Blocks - 1980\" width=\"420\" height=\"314\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Altered Tumbling Blocks &#8211; 1980<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">First finished quilt<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">My first completed quilt was made when I was in my late-twenties for our son&#8217;s first big boy bed.\u00a0 It is a hand stitched, scrappy altered Tumbling Blocks .\u00a0 I used an ugly mustard-colored blanket for batting and rolled the backing to the front for border\/binding.\u00a0 It is full bed sized and has been very loved and washed many, many times.\u00a0 It still survives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Through the years when life allowed,\u00a0 I&#8217;ve continued to make quilts.\u00a0 Many are hand pieced and all are hand quilted with the exception of one, which was used to test a very early quilting machine my father-in-law was developing.\u00a0 I hated it and felt it ruined my quilt top.\u00a0 I still carry an aversion for machine quilting because of that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I continue to love making quilts.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve recently made a few machine pieced quilts tops on newly acquired vintage sewing machines but I continue to enjoy hand piecing and always have a hand project in the works.\u00a0 I also enjoy cooking, eating, reading and travel but you can most often find me with needle and fabric at hand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I&#8217;m so glad you stopped by.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 10px 0px 0px 0px; text-align: left; font-size: 11px; color: #777;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Shirl<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Welcome fellow Celebrate Hand Quilting blog and Facebook friends.\u00a0 I&#8217;m Shirley Lucher-Suter on FB and shirlsu in the blogging world.\u00a0 So glad you&#8217;ve stopped by!
