{"id":2158,"date":"2014-06-10T18:47:35","date_gmt":"2014-06-10T23:47:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/?page_id=2158"},"modified":"2015-02-26T17:50:04","modified_gmt":"2015-02-26T23:50:04","slug":"urban-renewal-started-june-2014","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/?page_id=2158","title":{"rendered":"2014 &#8211; Urban Renewal Sofa Quilt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>06\/10\/14:\u00a0 <\/strong>Began this quilt last night using leftover hexagon scraps from the &#8216;Grandmother&#8217;s Flower Garden&#8217; quilt top.\u00a0 This pattern is commonly known as &#8216;Inner City&#8217; but since I&#8217;m literally using trash to make the English Paper Pieced units, I&#8217;m renaming it &#8216;Urban Renewal&#8217;.\u00a0 It does remind me of a city landscape coated with fresh, bright paints.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2152\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 418px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Inner-City-beginning-060814.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2152\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Inner-City-beginning-060814.jpg\" alt=\"Inner City embryo\" width=\"418\" height=\"344\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Urban Renewal (Inner City) quilt embryo<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>06\/20\/14\u00a0 <\/strong>Got all the pieces cut for this quilt.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll probably have extras for either a baby or dog quilt.\u00a0 I like having those on hand for quick, impressive gifts.\u00a0 The units roughly laid out currently measure 45&#8243; x 24&#8243;.\u00a0 It grows each day!<a href=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Urban-Renewal-062014.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-2163\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Urban-Renewal-062014.jpg\" alt=\"SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES\" width=\"537\" height=\"275\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>9\/9\/14\u00a0 <\/strong>I work on this quilt top nearly every day and it&#8217;s slow going.\u00a0 This is how it looks now and measures 52&#8243; x 60&#8243;.\u00a0 I&#8217;m considering adding another row or two, then straightening the edges with black pieces and adding a black border.\u00a0 It will be a nice size sofa quilt.\u00a0 Because of the amount of work involved, this quilt may live at my house instead of being gifted.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Urban-Renewal-090914.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-2312\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Urban-Renewal-090914.jpg\" alt=\"SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES\" width=\"543\" height=\"475\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>10\/05\/14:\u00a0 <\/strong>Finished straightening the edges with black partial units and stitched on a black border.\u00a0 I still need to miter the corners of the border and decide what I want to do next to this top&#8230;. Do I add a pieced border?&#8230;. or another solid border?&#8230;. or leave it with a single black border?\u00a0 Then comes the decision of what backing, quilting design(s) and binding to use.\u00a0 Decisions, decisions, decisions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For a picture tutorial, see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/?p=2315\">http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/?p=2315<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>10\/22\/14:\u00a0 <\/strong>After auditioning several borders, I&#8217;ve settled for Flying Geese.\u00a0 I like the extra size it adds to this top.\u00a0 The top now measures 62&#8243; x 78&#8243;.\u00a0 It should be big enough for sofa snuggling.\u00a0 Hoping to sandwich and hand baste it soon.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Urban-Renewal-w-border1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-2377\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Urban-Renewal-w-border1.jpg\" alt=\"SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES\" width=\"592\" height=\"381\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>11\/03\/14:\u00a0 <\/strong>Hand basting is done and quilting has begun! For those interested in the details, I\u2019m using Hobb\u2019s Poly-Down batting and a light grey and black \u2018stone\u2019 108\u2033 wide backing (trimmed).\u00a0 The thread is black YLI Quilting 40\/3 ply.\u00a0 The needles for this project are R.J.
