{"id":1288,"date":"2013-05-13T22:50:49","date_gmt":"2013-05-14T03:50:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/?page_id=1288"},"modified":"2016-02-27T12:55:00","modified_gmt":"2016-02-27T18:55:00","slug":"altered-tumbling-blocks-1980","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/?page_id=1288","title":{"rendered":"1979 &#8211; Altered Tumbling Blocks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>T<span style=\"color: #000000;\">his is the first quilt I ever completed&#8230; mostly because I thought I was going to die.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When my son was born in 1978, I became deathly ill and was eventually diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis.\u00a0 No doctor would give me a straight answer as to whether I would live or die so I decided I better hurry and make a quilt for my son so he would have something to remind him of the love his dead mother felt for him.\u00a0 I began the quilt in early 1979.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I was too weak to use scissors (or swallow or smile for that matter) but with the little money we had, Bob bought electric scissors, a super marked-down ugly dijon mustard-colored blanket (for batting) and a mint green sheet (backing).\u00a0 The electric scissors worked well through this one quilt before they bit the dust.\u00a0 I already had lots of scraps from garment sewing so I made cardboard templates and proceeded to make this quilt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thank goodness for this quilt!\u00a0 It helped serve as a distraction to my illness and added to my determination to live, at least until it was finished.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This altered Tumbling Blocks (block sides are different size from the tops) is entirely hand pieced and hand quilted with &#8216;5 spools for $1&#8217; polyester thread (the only thread I could afford).\u00a0 The quilt has been much loved and washed many dozens of times.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It has survived, as have I.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1245\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 600px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Tumbling-blocks-1980.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1245 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Tumbling-blocks-1980.jpg\" alt=\"Tumbling Blocks - 1979\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Tumbling Blocks &#8211; 1979<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; This is the first quilt I ever completed&#8230; mostly because I thought I was going to die.
