L O N G\u00a0 ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">She arrived a little dirty but in perfect condition so with a day of cleaning and oiling, she was ready to go.\u00a0 Boy this baby hums and I love how fast she sews.\u00a0 Her stitches are beautiful and I couldn&#8217;t be happier about this inexpensive acquisition.\u00a0 I felt compelled to make a quilt top!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Since seeing a student-sewn partial top on <a href=\"http:\/\/quiltville.blogspot.com\/2012\/06\/sisters-choice-morning.html\">Bonnie K. Hunter&#8217;s blog on June 29, 2012<\/a>, I haven&#8217;t been able to get a Split-16 quilt out of my mind.\u00a0 Though I couldn&#8217;t find a free pattern online that matched the student&#8217;s top, I decided to come up with my own measurements and using the picture from the blog, I simulated the layout&#8230; and loved it!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">After much deliberation, the top was finished the first of May.\u00a0 It is now in the quilt frame.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_962\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 620px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/split-16-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-962\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/split-16-1.jpg\" alt=\"Split -16 \" width=\"620\" height=\"390\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Split -16 before adding last border<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1107\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 450px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/plain-green.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1107\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/plain-green.jpg\" alt=\"Plain green final border\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Plain green final border<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Update:\u00a0 05\/09\/13<\/strong> Quilting has begun!\u00a0 My name, location and date have been quilted.\u00a0 Hopefully, I can finish this quilt as indicated by the 2013 date!\u00a0 It&#8217;s a lot of quilting on a large quilt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Update:\u00a0 01\/03\/15\u00a0 <\/strong>Good grief!\u00a0 Has it really been that long since I worked on this quilt?\u00a0 How embarrassing to say this quilt remains in the frame.\u00a0 The quilting on the main body is nearly complete but no quilting has been done on the borders.\u00a0 I still can&#8217;t decide what to do with them.\u00a0 I <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">am<\/span> working on this today and hope to finish the main quilting soon &lt;&#8211; we&#8217;ve heard this before!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update:\u00a0 01\/04\/15\u00a0 <\/strong>YIPPEE!!!\u00a0 The main body of the quilt is quilted!\u00a0 Now, I MUST decide how the borders will be quilted.\u00a0 I&#8217;m spending the evening looking for inspiration and doing research.\u00a0 I&#8217;m determined to finish this large quilt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update:\u00a0 01\/22\/15\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Took several days but finally finished quilting the top borders.\u00a0 Feel funny quilting the top edge first but that&#8217;s what&#8217;s exposed and I will work what is normally backward until I get to the bottom and finish the quilt. I&#8217;ve begun marking and stitching the side borders.\u00a0 Fingers crossed I don&#8217;t get discouraged!\u00a0 This baby&#8217;s been in the frame <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">WAY<\/span> too long!!<a href=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/miles-of-border.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2485\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/miles-of-border.jpg\" alt=\"SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES\" width=\"217\" height=\"359\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Update:\u00a0 04\/14\/15\u00a0 <\/strong>Was finally able to spend a little time with these borders.\u00a0 It seems any excuse or distraction pulls me away; first emergency sofa quilts, and now spring planting in the garden.\u00a0 I&#8217;m truly hoping to continue pecking away at these borders between watering the garden and soon harvesting veggies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update:\u00a0 06\/07\/15\u00a0 <\/strong>TAH DAH!\u00a0 The quilting is complete and the quilt is out of the frame.\u00a0 Hopefully, between harvesting and canning garden veggies, I&#8217;ll trim the edges, cut, make and apply binding, give it a good hand washing and photograph it.\u00a0 It&#8217;s almost shocking to see the frame empty.\u00a0 It won&#8217;t stay that way for long!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update:\u00a0 06\/08\/15\u00a0 <\/strong>Easy date change from a &#8216;2013&#8217; to a &#8216;2015&#8217; and edge trimmed.\u00a0 Tomorrow I&#8217;ll cut and maybe sew some binding.\u00a0 Can hardly wait to see it bound and washed!\u00a0 This is a BIG, heavy quilt&#8230; currently measuring 116&#8243; x 102&#8243;, prior to binding.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/trimmed-and-date-changed.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2631\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/trimmed-and-date-changed.jpg\" alt=\"SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES\" width=\"491\" height=\"379\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Update:\u00a0 07\/02\/15\u00a0 <\/strong>Binding is pieced, sewn on and hand stitched.\u00a0 DH suggested a pieced binding and I decided to make it narrow.\u00a0 I really like how it turned out:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Split-16-finish.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2674 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Split-16-finish.jpg\" alt=\"SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES\" width=\"720\" height=\"540\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/s-16-front-quilting.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2676\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/s-16-front-quilting.jpg\" alt=\"SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES\" width=\"512\" height=\"356\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/s-16-back-quilting.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2675\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shirlsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/s-16-back-quilting.jpg\" alt=\"SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES\" width=\"510\" height=\"374\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The finished measurements are 116&#8243; x 102&#8243; and will look pretty terrific as a bedspread on my antique queen size bed.\u00a0 The backing is mottled forest green wide fabric and I&#8217;ve included a pieced strip across it (not pictured).\u00a0 It&#8217;s a nice accent on the ocean of green.\u00a0 I used YLI 40\/3 ply ecru cotton hand quilting thread throughout.\u00a0 The finished quilt was hand washed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>02\/2013\u00a0 With the approach of my February birthday, I decided to purchase a Singer 301A sewing machine manufactured the same year I was born&#8230;.
